Competition Rules
GENERAL
COMPETITION CATEGORIES DEFINED
Monthly competitions will be held in, Pictorial, Monochrome, and Nature categories. Twice yearly there will be an open category (proposed dates: June and November) in our competitions - once for Prints and once for Digital - to accommodate the use of extended AI components in the images.
Pictorial (P) Color or black and white images taken by either digital or film cameras. Image subject matter is unrestricted, and must always be your own work. Post-processing techniques
that add, relocate, combine, replace, or remove pictorial elements are permitted. However, replacement or generation of a significant amount using AI software is not permitted (The goal is to present YOUR work, overall, so the pixels should be overwhelmingly created by you). Normal burning, dodging, spot / scratch removal, sharpening, vignetting and cropping are allowed.
HDR, focus stacking, and panoramas are permitted. Stitched images, infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations are permitted. The image shall portray truth or reality.
Monochrome (M) Images contain shades of gray from black to white, or be a grayscale image that has been toned in one color across the entire image. Any image that is multi-colored
or has a spot of color shall be classified as a color image. Post-processing techniques that add, relocate, combine, replace, or remove pictorial elements are permitted. Normal burning,
dodging, spot / scratch removal, sharpening, vignetting and cropping are allowed. HDR, focus stacking, and panoramas are permitted. Stitched images, infrared images, either direct captures
or derivations are permitted. The image shall portray truth or reality.
Nature (N) Images cover a wide range of subjects taken outdoors and devoted to displaying landscapes, wildlife, insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles and all types of plants. Man made
objects in the image background and not the primary subject are permitted. However, replacement or generation of a significant amount using AI software is not permitted (The goal is to present YOUR work, overall, so the pixels should be overwhelmingly created by you). Images of wildlife with scientific bands, tags or radio collars are permitted. Images of mounted specimens are ineligible. Images of people and pets are ineligible. Entries may be color or monochrome. Cropping, dodging and burning, spot / scratch removal, sharpening, vignetting and cropping are allowed. Techniques that add, relocate, replace, or alter the truth of the image are not permitted. Stitched images, composites, and infrared images are also not permitted.
In General, for reality-based, restricted “theme” categories ( nature), techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the story or the basic pictorial subject content, and that do not alter the content of the original scene except by crop, vignette, HDR, focus stacking or dodging/burning, are permitted. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are also allowed. Color images can be converted to monochrome (See above definition). Techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping or vignetting are not permitted. Stitched images are not permitted. Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must appear natural.
Pictorial (P): Images must be photography-based and may be edited by computer software to digitally manipulate an image, or use in-camera techniques that alter reality. Cropping, HDR, focus stacking, panoramas, composites, dodging and burning are permitted. Use of AI-generated material is permitted. Dynamic Range (HDR) images without additional editing are not considered creative.
Awards will be given at an End-of-Year (EOY) awards presentation for best prints and digital images of the year as outlined below. All images that place during monthly competitions will be re-competed for the EOY in their same digital/or print category. EOY winners in each category (1st, 2nd, 3rd and HM) will receive ribbons and/or certificates. In addition, there will be awards for Photographer of the Year. EOY competition will determine two “Best of Show” images awarded annually, one for the Digital competitions and one for the Print competitions. See more notes listed below under End of Year Awards.
DIGITAL COMPETITION
LABELING DIGITAL AND PRINT EXAMPLES:
When labeling entries, use P for Pictorial, N for Nature and M for Monochrome; then your initials, and the image title. Please use _ (underscore) and not a - (dash). In the case of two people having the same first and last initials then three initials must be used: John Q Photographer i.e. JQP_ Digital participants should make sure that their image files are properly titled. If the files are not labeled correctly by the maker, they might not be used. The competition chairman will not guess which category the maker intended to enter.
PRINT COMPETITION
All reasonable care will be exercised in handling the prints submitted by the members, but the club cannot assume any responsibility in the event of loss or damage.
The Greater San Antonio Camera Club provides a special label, which can be downloaded at GSACC.org. Or you can use the fillable one on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/www.gsacc.org/files
This label is to be placed on the back of the print in the upper right hand corner so when the
print is held up for correct audience viewing, the person holding the print will be able to read the name and title of the print.
To enter the PRINT competition you must upload a 2MB image on the PRINT SUBMISSION PAGE on this website at: https://www.gsacc.org/print-submission-page.html
Image files must be saved in JPEG format. The title must be the same name as the sign up sheet.
When labeling entries, use the same format as explained above under the DIGITAL COMPETITION page. The images is then automatically sent to our PRINT chairman who will keep them for posting the winners on this website and keeping them for End of Year Award judging. You should get a reply in a day or so that your images have been received.
You then need to bring your prints to Lions Field Club on completion night by 6:30 PM to enter them for on site judging. Remember to follow all rules for submitting a print. Participants should bring their prints to the competition meeting correctly labeled, and entered on the score sheet before the start of the meeting. Any print not recorded by the start of the meeting will not be considered for competition. The scorekeeper will provide sign-up sheets for each category. It is the maker’s responsibility to ensure that their entries have been properly labeled, placed in the correct categories, and recorded on the corresponding score sheets. Participants should print clearly on the score sheets, as the scorekeeper and Website Editor must be able to read the sheets.
Images that placed will be entered in the End of Year print competition and displayed on our website.
THINGS TO DO FOR PRINT COMPETITION
DISQUALIFYING IMAGES
Photos of another artist’s drawing and/or painting, sculpture or other forms of art that feature the artwork as the primary subject will not be accepted and cannot be re-entered in another competition category.
Photos with artwork by other artists must have other elements that are more dominant. Photos that feature another artist’s artwork as the primary subjects are unacceptable because such images violate the original artist’s Copyright.
Semi-nude images depicting artistic poses, glamour, and swimsuit, will be allowed for competition. However, images depicting sexual activities, lewd exhibition of nudity, full frontal nudity, depiction of genitalia, boudoir images and display of areolas/nipples will not be displayed and will be permanently disqualified from any competition category. Boudoir photography refers to a style in which models pose for photographs partially clothed or in lingerie.
GSACC competition judges, by a majority vote, shall have the discretion to disqualify any competition entry in any category if they determine the entry does not meet the minimum criteria. Images disqualified due to the wrong category may be entered into a different category at the next competition date.
JUDGING COMPETITIONS
Competition entries are presented anonymously to a 3 judge panel selected by the president. This panel will be selected from Officers, Committee Chairmen, and Board of Director Members. Members at Large are encouraged to participate in judging. The judges electronically score each entry. The scores are seen only by the scorekeeper. The scorekeeper announces the total score and records it on the score sheet. When an entry is presented for scoring that has been entered by one of the judges, that judge scores a zero. The scorekeeper takes the average of the other two scores, rounding up when necessary, and adds it to the other two scores to get the total score for that entry. This process also applies for entries of family members of the judges. Only one member of a family at a time may judge a given competition. A family member is defined as any person related by blood, birth, or marriage including common law marriage.
Elements for Competition Judging
Elements for competition judging are tools for judges to use in evaluating images. The club strongly encourages members on the judging panel to to use these elements. They provide a
consistent evaluation method. When used for feedback they provide a positive learning experience. For example, saying, “The image uses a fresh approach and has visual impact” is
helpful, but saying “I like the image” is not.
● Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride wonder, horror or any other intense emotion in you. Often called WOW factor
● Technical excellence is all things you have learned about photography(exposure, focus, depth of field etc) that have to do with visual excellence of the image.
● Creativity -is the image original, fresh, and an external expression of the imagination of the maker, and the viewer?
● Composition - brings all of the visual elements together in concert. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to create a meaning from the image.
● Presentation -Does the image have a finished look. The mats and border used, physical or digital, should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.
● Color Harmony -An image where tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. For Monochrome, tonality may take the place of color and serve the image in a similar way.
● Interest Areas -the point or points on the image where the viewer wants to stop as they view the image. These are called fixation points.
● Light -the use and control of light refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image.
● Technique -Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation media, and more are all a part of the technique applied to an image.
● The Story -Story Telling refers to the image's ability to evoke imagination the viewer.
Scoring Competition Images
Zero (0) - Image is the judge’s or belongs to a member of the judge’s family.
One (1) - Not Used
Two (2) - Not Used
Three (3) -Not Used
Four (4) - Image meets the category definitions, has succeeded in minor ways and displays three components from “ Elements for Competition Judging”.
Five (5) - Image meets category definitions, average most ways and displays five components from “Elements for Competition Judging.”
Six (6) - Image meets category definitions, is above average and displays at least six components from “Elements for Competition Judging.”
Seven (7) -Image meets category definitions, is above average, has some Impact (minor Wow factor), and displays at least seven components from “Elements for Competition Judging".
Eight (8) - Image meets category definitions, above average Impact(Wow factor), and displays at least eight components from “Elements for Competition Judging".
Nine (9) -Image meets category definitions, is exceptional, flawless, lots of Impact(Wow factor), and displays at least eight components from “Elements for Competition Judging".
Resolution of Ties
Monthly competitions will recognize images placing first, second, third, and Honorable Mention. All ties will be broken and the results will be final. Two way ties will be broken with IN-OUT voting by judges. Three way or more ties will be rescored until there is one winner.
If an image is voted OUT, it will drop down one place and the other images will move down accordingly. i.e. If there is a two way tie for first, the IN image will take first and the out image will take second.
End of Year Awards
An awards meeting will be held on the first Thursday in May. Digital and print images that placed first, second, third and honorable mention during the preceding calendar year monthly
competitions will be sent to another club for judging.
"Photographer of the Year" and the Outstanding Digital and Print Photographer awards.
NOTE: New addendum as of May 27, 2022
Also discussed was the way scoring is done to determine end of year (EOY) awards.
Our bylaws state the scores from each competition are to be totaled to determine
place for EOY awards. It has been noticed that some judges give relatively low scores
and some give relatively high scores. In order to even out these differences in scoring
by judges a change was proposed. The proposal is that we change the method of
scoring to the following:
in that place no matter what the score was at the competition. At the end of the year
whichever member has the most points will be Photographer of the Year for Print or
Digital competitions except that the club Photographer of the Year is not eligible to be
Print or Digital Photographer of the year.
The proposal was accepted by the committee. The bylaws will be amended to reflect
this change.
- Only current Greater San Antonio Camera Club (GSACC) members are eligible to enter competitions. Members are encouraged to enter any or all categories, but are limited to one print or one digital image per category per month. All entries must have a title. Print and digital entries without titles are ineligible.
- Competitions will occur on the first Thursday of each month.
- Print competitions are held in January, March, May, July, September and November.
- Digital competitions are held in February, April, June, August, October and December.
- By virtue of submitting an entry, the member certifies the work as her/his own and permits the Greater San Antonio Camera Club to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the Greater San Antonio Camera Club. This will include possible low resolution posting on our website. The Greater San Antonio
- Camera Club assumes no liability for any misuse of copyright. It is strongly advised that makers of portraits obtain a signed model release.
- All prints entered in GSACC competitions may be film or digital based and printed by any photographic process, personal or commercial.
- Non-photographic printing process such as lithography, serigraph or silk screening processes are not permitted.
