GSACC Competition Rules

You can download a PDF version of the rules here.

We have competitions, not just to see who the best photographer is, but to give members the opportunity to see their work compared with others and to improve their photographic abilities from this competition experience and from the critiques following the competitions.

Competitions are held on the third Thursday of each month. In March, May, July, September and November, we will have print competitions. In April, June, August, October and December, we will have projected image competitions.

Last year, competition categories were revised to better match Gulf States’ competitions. We have five categories for prints and five categories for projected images (prints and slides), as follows:

PRINTS

  1. Pictorial Prints Color
  2. Pictorial Prints Monochrome
  3. Nature Prints
  4. Photojournalism Prints
  5. Assignment Prints

PROJECTED IMAGES

  1. Pictorial Slides
  2. Pictorial Digital
  3. Nature Projected Images
  4. Photojournalism Projected Images
  5. Assignment Slides
  6. Assignment Digital

More details about the categories are listed in the competition rules section below.

Members are encouraged to enter any or all categories, but are limited to one print, one digital image, or two slides per category per month. An entry may be submitted only once unless it has been changed and noted (see POINTS).

The Greater San Antonio Camera Club provides a special label (designed to be printed on Avery 8164 self adhesive label paper) which members must use on the back of all prints entered in competition. This label will be placed on the back of the print in the upper right hand corner so when the print is held up for correct audience viewing, the person holding the print will be able to read the name and title of the print. Use the same maker’s name on all of your entries. Download label here.

We also have a new version of the label for you to download that will work on Avery 8163. Please download it here.

In the slide competitions, please mark your slides to assist our projectionist and points secretary. The spot goes in the lower left hand corner of the slide mount when the slide is held in the proper viewing position (as it should appear when projected on the screen). The title goes to the right of the spot upside down. Your name and address should be at the top of the slide, but can be on the other side when the slide is a vertical format. Use the same form of your name on all entries. See an example of a slide entry on the next page.

GENERAL RULES
The backing and the mounting of all prints must be the same dimensions (H°—W). When the backing is smaller than the mount, the prints will not stay on the ledge that holds the prints on display for judging.

Competitions are held in five print divisions and five projected image divisions. The divisions are:

PRINTS DIVISIONS

  1. Pictorial Prints Color
  2. Pictorial Prints Monochrome
  3. Nature Prints
  4. Photojournalism Prints
  5. Assignment Prints

All images must have been exposed by the entrant, but may be developed and printed by either the maker or commercially.

When an 8” by 10” print is entered with matting over the print, the matting can cover no more than 1/4” on any side, thus making the minimum visible image no smaller than 7” by 9”.

PROJECTED IMAGES DIVISIONS

  1. Pictorial Slides
  2. Pictorial Digital
  3. Nature Projected Images
  4. Photojournalism Projected Images
  5. Assignment Projected Images

After images are scored, our judges for the evening’s competition will make comments regarding the images. In print competitions, comments will be made starting with the lowest scoring print and ending with the highest scoring print. In projected image competitions, comments may not be made in the lowest to highest sequence, as it is easier to avoid switching back and forth between the slide projector and the digital projector.

PRINT COMPETITION RULES
The Greater San Antonio Camera Club provides a special label (designed to be printed on Avery 5164 self adhesive label paper) which members must use on the back of all prints entered in competition. This label will be placed on the back of the print in the upper right hand corner so when the print is held up for correct audience viewing, the person holding the print will be able to read the name and title of the print. Use the same maker’s name on all of your entries. Download label here.

All reasonable care will be exercised in handling the prints and slides submitted by the members, but the club cannot assume any responsibility in the event of loss or damage. Entries without titles are ineligible in our competitions and therefore will not be accepted for competition.

The backing and the mounting of all prints MUST be the same dimension (H xW). When the backing is smaller than the mount the prints will not stay on our print box ledge.

  1. Pictorial Prints Color (anything, anywhere, anytime; this category was formerly known as “general subject”)
  2. Pictorial Prints Monochrome (anything, anywhere, anytime; this category was added this year because Gulf States judges color and monochrome “general subject” images separately)
  3. Nature Prints (Color and Monochrome images are judged together.)
  4. Photojournalism Prints (Color and Monochrome images are judged together.)
  5. Assignment Prints (Color and Monochrome images are judged together.)

All images must have been exposed by the entrant, but may be developed and printed by either the maker or commercially.

When an 8” by 10” print is entered with matting over the print, the matting can cover no more than 1/4” on any side, thus making the minimum visible image no smaller than 7” by 9”.

PROJECTED IMAGES COMPETITION RULES
In the slide competitions please mark your slides as shown at right to assist our projectionist and points secretary. The spot goes in the lower left hand corner of the slide mount when the slide is held in the proper viewing position (as it should appear when projected on the screen). The title goes to the right of the spot upside down. Your name and address should be at the top of the slide, but can be on either side when the slide is a vertical format. Use the same form of your name on all entries.

PROJECTED IMAGES ( DIGITAL / SLIDES )

  1. Pictorial Slides (Color and Monochrome images are judged together.)
  2. Pictorial Digital (Color and Monochrome images are judged together.)
  3. Nature Projected Images (Slides and digital images are judged together. Images may be Color or Monochrome.)
  4. Photojournalism Projected Images (Slides and digital images are judged together. Images may be Color or Monochrome.)
  5. Assignment Projected Images (Slides and digital images are judged together. Images may be Color or Monochrome.)

Image Format: Please submit your images in the JPEG image format, as this is universally recognized and will allow for judging at other clubs, without specially installed software.

File/Image Size: The preferred size is 1024 x 768. The computer will automatically resize the images to fit the screen; but any images smaller than 1024 x 768 pixels will be enlarged to fit the screen, causing an added grainy appearance (AND PROBABLY MANY COMPLAINTS).

File Naming: Use a file name for the image which indicates the category and color, or B/W. Example: P_C_LM_Church.jpg

Use P for Pictorial, N for Nature, A for Assignment categories, PJ for Photojournalism, C for Color, M for Monochrome, your initials, and the Image title name. Please note the _ (underscore) which is not a - (dash). In the case of two people having the same first and last initials then three initials must be used: i.e. LJM for Lance J. Meyer.

Submitting: Images should be submitted to the following email addresses per category no later than the Tuesday before the competition:

Pictorial Digital: gsaccpictorial@hotmail.com
Nature: gsaccnature@hotmail.com
Photojournalism: gsaccpj@hotmail.com
Assignment: gsaccassignment@hotmail.com

This gives the digital chairman time to properly arrange the submissions. It is assumed that anybody making digital images will have internet capabilities.

ASSIGNMENT
ASSIGNMENTS are listed in the yearbook and in the February issue of the GSACC Flash (our monthly newsletter). Entries for the assignment categories must have been exposed after the publication of the assignments. Assignment entries must be in the same format as other images for that month’s competition (prints for print competition months and slides or digital images for projected image months).

GENERAL
Anything – anywhere – anytime…

NATURE
NATURE subjects may be taken anywhere and anytime, but must otherwise conform to the following definition of nature (from PSA and GSCCC).

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify to its honest presentation. The story-telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality. Human elements should not be present unless, on the rare occasion where human elements enhance the nature story, they are unobtrusive. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, obviously set arrangements, derivations, or any form of photographic manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement are ineligible, with the exceptions of detailed micro or macro photographs and scientific banding on wild animals. Short descriptive titles are recommended for nature pictures; they are helpful when titles need to be read.

FYI: Virtually all dogs, household cats, horses, cows, domestic fowl (chickens) and many yard flowers are hybrids, therefore ineligible.

PHOTOJOURNALISM
Photojournalism entries may be taken anywhere and anytime, but must follow these guidelines set by GSCCC.

Photojournalism entries shall consist of pictures or sequences with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The journalistic value of the photograph shall be considered over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, photographs which misrepresent the truth, such as manipulation to alter the subject matter, or situations which are set up for the purpose of photography, are unacceptable in Photojournalism competition.

No elements may be moved, cloned, added, deleted, rearranged, combined or changed in any way that affects the integrity of the image content. No manipulation or modification is permitted except resizing, cropping, selective lightening or darkening, and restoration of original color of the scene. No special effect filters can be added or applied, and any sharpening must appear natural.

Print, slide, or digital sequences may be entered by placing more than one picture in a single image.

Current competition rules for all competitions provide for a three-member judging panel. Each judge scores each entry 1 through 9, resulting in a possible score of 3 to 27 for an entry. All ties of 21 or more will stand. Other ties will be broken by in or out voting by the three judges. Entries must be submitted to the points secretary by the beginning of each meeting.

All prints or projected images may be acquired either by film or digital imaging and may be manipulated, either in the darkroom or by using a computer program, and printed either commercially, in the darkroom, or with a computer printer. Exceptions: Nature and photojournalism entries may be cropped, but may not be altered in any other way.

POINT SYSTEM
The point schedule for each competition is four points for each entry in general, nature or photojournalism categories and six points for each entry in each assignment category. Additional points for placing:

  • 1st place - four (4)
  • 2nd place -three (3)
  • 3rd place - two (2)
  • 4th place - one (1)

Members can judge only twice a year, and will not be allowed to enter images in the competitions they judge. To compensate judges for the points they may have lost from not competing and to reward them for judging, each judge will be awarded points equivalent to entering and placing second in each print and digital image category, i.e. nine points for each assignment print and projected image category and seven points for each of the remaining print and projected image categories. These points will count toward year-end awards but will actually have effect only on the categories the judges regularly enter. Since members are limited to judging twice annually, the 14 to 18 points given in categories they normally do not enter will have little or no effect on the year-end high point tally.

Competition rules provide that each competition chairman shall retain any entry that places for the remainder of the year plus about six months. These retained images form a reservoir of possible entries for the GSCCC bimonthly club and year-end competitions and for our club’s year-end competitions. One may withdraw an entry from the chairman, but in doing so will forfeit all points earned by that entry.
