How to Stabilize and steady your camera for sharper images

At GSACC’s August 4 educational meeting, Tim Kirkland offered tips that may help members stabilize and steady their cameras. These tips will help sharpen images. Here are some of the tips Tim offered:

    1. Find a solid shooting platform.
    2. Use clamps with lightweight cameras.
    3. When shooting handheld, steady yourself and distribute your weight.
    4. Posts, solid vertical columns and walls could be used as braces to steady yourself.
    5. Monopods are lightweight and easy to carry. Consider using a monopod if a tripod isn’t practical.
    6. Use a beanbag for stability
    7. Avoid camera shake when releasing the shutter.
    8. Consider using a cable release or a self-timer.
    9. Wood and aluminum tripods have the least amount of vibration.

Organization has been “GSACC” for 10 years

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the club’s name change. From 1951-2001, the club was the Woodlawn Camera Club. The club met for many years at the Jefferson United Methodist Church on Donaldson, in the Woodlawn area.

The camera club started meeting at the Lions Field Adult Center in February 1998. The club relocated after the church kept moving meetings to different rooms.

In 2001, the club members realized that the “Woodlawn” name might be meaningless to people who were searching for a camera club. In the August 2001 issue of the Flash, Jay Emrie offered several name possibilities. Names offered included San Antonio Photographic Society. The acronym “SAPS” obviously made that name a poor choice.

The club voted in September 2001 to change the name to “Greater San Antonio Camera Club.” The launch of a new club web site followed the name change.

The name change and the eventual creation of our present web site, www.gsacc.org, were important milestones in the club’s history. These changes helped ensure that the club would continue to attract new members and thrive.

More importantly, September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed close to 3000 Americans and left damage in New York, Washington, D. C. and Pennsylvania. I hope we will never forget the heroes and victims of that day.

The October 2001 issue of the Flash was the first to say “Greater San Antonio Camera Club Flash” at the top instead of “Woodlawn Camera Club Flash.” Though the issue did not mention the events of 9/11, it did include patriotic clipart.
